Mind Games: Psychology Meets AI

I analyzed 20 million Steam reviews to prove your personality predicts your gaming tastes.

Mind Games: Psychology Meets AI

A little bit of background

In 2021, I decided for my thesis to write about something I was fascinated about: the intersection of personality psychology and video game preferences. I was convinced of something. First, that personality traits (more specifically, the Big 5 personality: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism) could be used to predict the types of games people enjoy. Secondly, that genres marketed by developers were fuzzy, dated, and often misaligned with players’ true preferences. My idea was that games genres could stem from reviews written by users, rather than from the publishers. All in all, I wanted to use data science to uncover the hidden patterns in Steam reviews and show that using those insights could lead to better game recommendations, tailored to the personality of the player likely to react positively to them.

I decided to get to work.
